British Air Force Typhoon jets have joined forces with France's air force in a joint strike on an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The site, identified by reconnaissance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was situated in mountainous terrain just to the north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a several access tunnels down to the depot... preliminary assessments indicate the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the strike conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft made a safe return, the MoD added.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed militant control over large swathes of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike shows the UK's leading role, and determination to operate in unison with our allies, to eradicate any resurgence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

RAF aircraft have conducted surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State following its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank the personnel of our armed forces participating in this operation for their expertise and their courage," Healey added. "They were among a great many British personnel stationed over the festive period. This operation, to remove militants who pose a risk to our safety, highlights how British military are always on standby, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure within its borders and influential overseas."

In December, the American forces carried out what it described as a "major assault" on IS targets in Syria, subsequent to an assault resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The UN reports Daesh still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand militants in both countries.
