Pick of the Week
The Substance
Coralie Fargeat's unflinching critique examines the tyranny of women's appearance along with the feared consequences of ageing. The veteran actress presents a brilliant portrayal as Elisabeth, a 50-year-old actress forced into hosting a workout series on TV. Forced aside by her slimy boss Harvey, played by Dennis Quaid, she undergoes a mysterious and terrifying procedure known as the Substance. This generates a youthful duplicate portrayed by Margaret Qualley, leading to a progressively toxic connection among both women. This Friday, Paramount Plus
The Woman in Cabin 10

Presence Film
Soderbergh pushes his film-making abilities in this innovative supernatural story captured wholly from the perspective of the spirit. After a clan featuring mother Rebekah and troubled teenage daughter Chloe occupies their recent residence, the camera – as the unseen entity – shadows their actions. The teen shows signs of aware of the poltergeist, and it seems guarding her. But why? It's a fun idea that doesn't outstay its welcome, featuring a surprise you might not see coming. Saturday 11 October, afternoon and evening times, Sky Cinema
The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent
The iconic actor wholeheartedly adopts his unique fame via this self-referential adventure. He plays a narcissistic film star called Nicolas Cage who takes on a lucrative offer to visit a celebration at a Mediterranean location for billionaire superfan Javi. Hired by the CIA to investigate the potential kingpin, his unique performing skills proves useful. October 11th, prime time, the Channel 4 network
The Black Phone Horror
Scott Derrickson's claustrophobic thriller holds up well despite the lack of a follow-up. Set in 1970s Colorado, a series of child abductions has left the local kids anxious. Once Finney gets captured by the villain and held captive in a dungeon, he dreads the worst. However, the non-functional line in the room continues to ring, with eerie communicators giving advice, and the prescient dreams of Gwen, his sister may be his salvation. A solid creepfest. Saturday 11 October, nighttime, Film4
The Eyes of Tammy Faye
In the conflict between spirituality and money, the winner is obvious for materialism in Michael Showalter's wonderfully garish true story of the disgraced televangelist and her felon spouse. Garfield acts as the greedy Jim, who proclaims initially, asserting religious justification for riches. Both individuals set about capitalizing on the nation's Christian beliefs. It's a spectacle of poor styling, bad makeup and insincerity, yet Jessica Chastain achieves to show the character as a sympathetic figure. Tuesday 14 October, late night, on Film4
This Espionage Thriller
The current week's additional entry from the filmmaker is a spy mystery as tight similar to the collars sported by Michael Fassbender's UK spy. Each performer are experts of deadpan cool, resulting in an engaging psychological game of truth or lie develops.
