The UK and US have agreed to a significant trade agreement that will preserve no duties on British medicine products being sold in the US market.

Agreement Details of the Accord

In exchange for the tariff guarantee, the UK has committed to boost expenditure on drugs through the public health system. This move ensures that import taxes on these key goods will stay at zero for a period of 36 months.

This deal is in response to previous threats to hike tariffs on branded drug imports, with figures floated reaching one hundred percent.

"This agreement with the Britain bolsters the global environment for new treatments and introduces long-overdue balance to U.S.–U.K. pharmaceutical trade," an announcement said.

Trade Impact

Pharmaceuticals represent one of the the United Kingdom's most significant exports to the United States, which is by far the primary buyer for major companies like GSK and AstraZeneca.

Statistics reveal that in the one-year period leading up to the third quarter, the UK exported drugs valued at £11.1bn to the US. This figure represented 17.4% of British export trade in that timeframe.

"This deal secures work, stimulates capital expenditure and sets the stage for the UK to become a international leader for life sciences," the Business and Trade Secretary commented.

Detailed British Pledges

The pact entails several specific changes from the UK:

  • Higher Cost Ceiling: The UK will lift the price threshold at which it considers new treatments to be unaffordable by 25%.
  • Higher Drug Budget: There is a target to raise total public funding on medicines from 0.3% of the national economy to 0.6 percent over the following ten-year period.
  • Refund Ceiling: The amount pharmaceutical firms must return to the NHS to prevent overspending will be restricted at fifteen percent. Last year, refunds exceeded twenty percent.

Broader Context

The deal follows a protracted dispute between the pharmaceutical industry and the British authorities over drug pricing and NHS adoption.

The disagreement were heightened by claims that US consumers were charged significantly more for the same drugs than consumers in the Britain and the EU.

In recent months, several significant pharmaceutical investments in the UK have been delayed or abandoned, while major investments have been announced toward projects in the United States.

The Science Minister publicly accepted that the NHS had to invest a greater share on medicines, noting that its expenditure on drugs had declined as a share of its total funding over the past decade.
